Ubuntu 9.04 becomes unresponsive

 My display will stop refreshing the screen information, I can end up with white boxes where a window was once open. Sometimes before the mouse pointer becomes unresponsive, when the pointer is placed over the white box , the information that was originally there will pop up in small chunks.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Any suggestions on how to fix help will be greatly appreciated :)

Try turning of all effects

System -> Appearance -> Visual effects -> None
