Solo 9500 video problem

Asked by Randy_C

I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a Gateway Solo 9500 laptop. I'm having 2 problems the first is the video.

If I boot without an external monitor hooked up the desktop has a portion of the right side of the screen duplicated and placed right down the middle of the display. When I cycle through the LCD/CRT function the display comes back normal. The problem is it will only do 800x600 resolution with an unknown monitor. Nothing I've tried makes it work.

If I boot with an external monitor connected I get a normal screen and 1280x1024 resolution. There isn't even a display on the external monitor because the output is turned off in both the BIOS and the OS.

Can you please provide the output of:

sudo lshw -C display

The model and make of thelaptop means nearly nothing, Linux doesn't see that. It only sees the hardware in the system.

Thanks

randy@randy-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -c display
[sudo] password for randy:

This is what I get with the monitor connected. I'm new to linux so I don't even know what the command I typed in does.

None of the descriptions mention the ATI mobility. They all refer to Radion chipsets. I typed in the commands and the second one reports a file not found error. Where do I get this fglrx.ko file. I used the file search funtion on file system, randy, and the install CD.

You will need to run:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and edit it so that the driver line reads:

Driver "radeon"

This is the open source driver that ships with a default install of Ubuntu.

If you visit

www.ati.com

You may find that the proprietary driver supports your card.

There is no line that says Driver to change to "radeon". Here is the meat of the file. And the erros I got while trying the first fix. Right now I'm afaid to turn the machine off in case that first command broke something that the second command was to fix.

No one has responded for the last 24 hours. I really need to get this and other problems solved. My guess is I just need to get the correct driver for my video installed. Unfortunately since I'm new to Linux and I have no idea how to find the driver let alone how to install it. Please help. Thank you.

Thanks for posting your xorg.conf

Hopefully this will help others in the same predicament and they can use sections (or all) of your file
