Hi Rahul

I had the same problem when I was a bit new to Ubuntu. Its a good thing that you have KDE.

First take the back up of all the files & folders on your desktop & in your Home folder. Then go to Users & Groups (I'm not sure what exactly the name is in KDE) and create a new account. Now log out & log in with your new account with GNOME session. It should work properly. Now go to Users & Accounts and delete your old account.

Hope you found something useful here.
Cheers
