windows go black after a while

Asked by dumpa

Hi,
I installed ubuntu hardy some days ago.
Sometimes when I resize a window or maximize a window it goes black, and I can't see anything inside the window.
After that menus go black. I have to guess where the location of the cross to close the window. And few minutes later it is really anoying, it starts happening on all other applications, and I have to reboot.

I don't have many hints about it. I have no visual effects install at all.

any clues?

thanks

Hi,
a good way to start is to check logs for related error messages
e.g.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (system administration -> system log)
.xession-errors (hidden in home/user)

##You don't need to reboot, please try ctrl+alt+backspace, this will restart the XServer.

Your problem sounds the same as the one described here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=592909

So, if you have an Nvidia graphics card, you might try using the latest drivers.

Can you help with this problem?
