ATI Radeon HD 4530 Graphics no Gui during installation... NEED HELP!!!!

Asked by sunny

Hi guys,
I just got a new laptop last week.
Configuration:
Intel Core 2 Duo P7460 2.13 ghz
ATI Radeon HD 4530 Graphics

Main Problem:
The main problem is that when i boot from ubuntu 8.10 to install it...it gets all the way up until a GUI needs to show up for installation...that's where it stops and a command prompt is given. Not really sure how to go from there. So after a lot of reasearch I found out that I need the alternate CD first install it then install the desktop then the ATI drivers (since ATI and Ubuntu aren't good friends). This was an absolute pain but I installed the alternate CD version and then installed the ubuntu desktop and then I was hoping it worked but the desktop obviosuly did not. That's where I was stuck and couldn't figure out how to even get the drivers on there. Is there a way I can download them on windows (I dual boot between ubuntu and vista) and burn it to a cd and load them? and if yes, then how exactly does it recognize and how am i supposed to all this in command prompt. If you guys have a different way please share. I was thinking possibly getting 8.04 and then installing ati drivers and then upgrade to 8.10....But i'm not even sure if 8.04 will bring up the gui to install...Why does ATI have to make this so hard....i've heard multiple places that fglrx or w.e it is is the solution but i dont know what it is or what version or how i go about installing it is. If someone could really point me in a direction they are sure will work ...that'd be fantastic! Any help at this poitn would be great! Ive been using ubuntu for about 8 months on my desktop and its great on my desktop since i have nvidia on there. Please Please help!

Have you try to launch the live-cd in "Safe Graphical Mode" modality?

Hi Antonio..thanks for getting back to me.

Yes I have tried that with no luck whatsoever. When I do that...using F4...it goes back to the same command prompt....any other ideas???

You're getting this problem with the Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit desktop alternate version? And you've been using this site
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download
to download from?

There is a way to install and use the ati proprietary drivers from the command line and then just type in

startx

should get somewhere but i'm not sure how to get the drivers installed and working in the first place. Ati is usually better than nVidia and have been much more helpful but we're still a long way from getting decent drivers for any of these cards.

Have you tried another distro's LiveCd? Sometimes finding a distro that does work and copyingt the relevant parts of there xorg.conf into the linux you want to use fixes the problem. Personally i would try Wolvix as the slackware based attempt because not many other slackware ones are so easy to use. Even the new beta version is quite friendly!
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
It'd be interesting to see if that does get you to a proper desktop.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I would actually just like ubuntu ...not really sure what wolvix is and i've never used it. i do have a decent amount of experience using ubuntu. I did do startx ...i think if i remember correctly it said no screens found error or something like that. I wish there was a faster way to do this ...well at this time i just downloaded the 8.04 version and am gonna try to fix it...if that doesnt work i will update you guys..

thanks for the suggestions and more would be appreciated

So here's what happened...

I had it installed..then i was reading a tutorial on where the person had the same problem and so what was suggested was i install the desktop first after i install the alternate cd version. I was like ok fine let's do that...i did that and then it rebooted and i was really hoping it would bring up a desktop but it ended up doing the same thing...and next i was trying to figure out how the heck to install the ati drivers...but i couldnt find any good sources on what to do so I decided im going to take a different route at this point....post my problem here see if i can find a solution and in the meanwhile try to see if i can install 8.04 w. success....i got rid of 8.10 by basically getting rid of the master boot record for linux and formatting my partition...so now im gonna try 8.04...i just got done downloading it...hopefully ill have some luck but not really sure...

if you guys have any other suggestions that'd be great. thanks guys!

marcobra,

I can install the alternate cd but what do i after i install that.....i need to install ati drivers ....do you know how i can possibly do that? I'm not very good w. command prompt commands...and once im in there i really am not sure as to how (or if i even can) get the desktop to work....i wanna be sure and know exactly what i need to do before i install the alternate cd again...the alternate cd thing is a definete pain and that's the reason i want to be sure i can get my desktop to work again.

Thanks though!

Please try the 8.04 now... then if the 8.04 fails we can try to solve the 8.10 ati related issue.
As your info on a old pc with ati on it i found very easy to install ubuntu 9.04 alpha6 release that dress Ati issue more or less like yours.

I give you the link to get the Jaunty alpha6 release ( but i repeat please first try the 8.04 because 9.04 Jaunty is not a stable release).

http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/alpha6

when i install Jaunty i usually use the jaunty alternate cd

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/alpha-6/jaunty-alternate-i386.iso.torrent

Hope this helps

I've heard some bad things about jaunty, so i'm not sure if that's the route i wanna take.

For now, What i do want to do is try the 8.04 first and then if that doesn't work...go back even more to the 7.* versions just to see if i can get something so i can install the ati drivers after....im honestly really lost as to what to do and i want this fixed...i dont like using windows and i need ubuntu...not just for personal usage but for regular school programming work..its a whole lot better.

Thank you!

I was wondering if you have been able to try another distro such as Wolvix or something - just as a LiveCd, not to install
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
If their Cd does get you to a "Live" desktop then we might be able to use that to help fix the problem in Ubuntu.

We want to get Ubuntu working on your machine, if that's possible, because it's clearly shown to be the most popular distro and we like it. A little help from one of the other distros might get us there ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ok well here's the update.

I was able to get ubuntu 8.04 to bring up the GUI. Once i got the gui up and running...i installed the driver from ati.com using the fglrx drivers or w.e and it seemed to work i believe because when i did fglrxinfo it gave me ATI Radeon as my video card.

But i have a few problems....when i try to open the catalyst command center it will not open ..it just doesnt do anything when i click on it. Any ideas? Because without the command center i cannot get dual monitoring..extended desktop and all that sort of good stuff

Great, i think you're getting somewhere :)
Have you been able to reboot back into the gui desktop? If you have and still aren't able to get into Catalyst Control then maybe try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Hardware Drivers

Is the ati driver lit green? If you try enabling this one does it say you already have another one installed or does it let you use this one easily enough? If trying it does bring up that pop-up error message then don't try the graphics driver from there and make sure to let us know.

Hopefully this will go a little bit more smoothly now.
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ok so yes i can reboot into the gui desktop with my ati drivers now with the perfect resolution and everything.....my only concern is that
1) I cannot open catalyst command center
This is the error:
amdcccle: ../../src/xcb_io.c:350: _XReply: Assertion `!dpy->xcb->reply_data' failed.
Aborted.
I googled this error and it seems like quite a few ppl have this problem, but i have not found a solution.
Is there a way I can maybe check version and update or something? I'm really not sure what to do because I need to the command center to work before i can do anything.

Thanks!

I think that "enabling" the driver as i described in my last post - and then rebooting - will then allow you into Catalyst.

If it says you already have another ati-driver enabled then don't enable the one in "Hardware Drivers" in case there's some other problem going on. We don't want to risk losing what does currently work. It's only by trying to enable the one in "Hardware Drivers" that might help us get any further with this i'm pretty sure.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
