startup hangs at command prompt

Asked by dads1948p

Ubuntu 8.10 starts normally then proceeds to Gnome Desktop and after username and password are entered. It takes you to a command prompt and waits for a text string to be entered to load Ubuntu 8.10. Problem is, no commands are listed in the help directory that will start the system. It worked fairly well after being upgraded from version 8.04LTS except that jre-6u12-linux-i586-rpm.bin would not load.

It halts al command prompt with every user in the system?
If you're the only one, you have to create a temporary user to check this by starting ubuntu at runlevel 1 (recovery mode) then running as root:

useradd -m -p password username
init 2

Tell us if it blocks at prompt or if it's chained to your standard user

Wouldn't start there either. Found out though, that Nvidia Gforce Video drivers will not work with Umbuntu 8.10. If one attempts to torn on 3D aspects of the card that it will erase all user information.
