need to rotate through screen resolutions with a keypress

Asked by mlg7

There used to be a functionality of rotating through available screen resolutions with a key combination.
Can it be done in Ubuntu?
My ubuntu sometimes goes into a video mode that is not compatible with the monitor (HP Compaq 6715b),
the workaround is to turn off and reboot.
The same glitch happens with gentoo.
probably, this is related to "via kernel/directly" option.
but anyway I want to change screen resolution with a keypress.

ALT + CTRL + BACKSPACE brings me to the login screen,
while what I want is to change the screen resolution.
