Changed resolution to highest, now it's too zoomed in to function, and i can't see enough of the settings screens to set it back

Asked by jeffheif1

Changed resolution to highest, now it's too zoomed in to function, and i can't see enough of the settings screens to set it back. I just downloaded ubuntu.

ALSO: i have it hooked up to a sony 60" tv, and out of the whole tv, there is only a small section of the screen displaying. if there's anyway to use my whole screen, i could probably see the rest of the desktop so i could use it...

When it happened, i tried restarting it, and i thought there was an 'apps' toolbar at the top, and a 'help (or something like that)' bar, so i right clicked and removed the apps bar from the top. my name fills up the whole top bar, and the two squares (one orange) take up the whole bottom bar...

Hey. thanks for your help!
BUT,
when i opened the gnome-display-properties thing, all i could see was the top of the window. I only say the check-mark box that said mirror. when i pressed that nothing happened, except the word in the red box switched. I couldn't see anything below half way down on the red box. right clicked and went to 'move', but even with the arrow keys, i couldn't move it down. Is there any way to do a settings restore, considering i just installed it the day I emailed you, and I fiddled around with a few settings?
please let me know what i could do.
Thank you very much
Jeffrey

Did u already try it with the save graphics mode?

you can get into it, when u hit esc during boot (the screen says something like Grub loading - and there is a countdown running for 3 seconds), then choose the second entry it's called recovery mode.
u will see a second prompt where one of the options is safe graphics mode, choose that and hit enter.

when u logged in change your setting back to an apropiate size and restart.

that should do the trick ;)

when I went into the recovery mode, the only options were:
resume - resume normal boot
clean - try to make free space
dpkg - repair broken packages
fsck - file system check
root - drop to root shell(sp) prompt
xfix - try to fix x server

There was no "safe graphics mode".

Please let me know if there is any other way to go about changing the resolution, because the computer is too zoomed in to work.

thanks
