no screens found

Asked by Peter Simons

I have a Ubuntu box that I want to use as a server, and connect to it via remote desktop.
Installed Ubuntu intrepid with a VGA monitor connected. All went fine.
Now I want to boot up without a monitor connected, and get following error:
(EE) screens found but have no usable configuration.
Xserver log file:Fatal server error.
No screens found.

I'm unable to connect via remote desktop.

Is there a way to modify the XServer config to have it boot regardless of a monitor having been found?

Hello Peter,

you cannot login via remote desktop unless the user is already logged into ubuntu. did you set ubuntu to autolog the user in? System → Administration → Login then security tab.

Yes, I did.
The machine boots up fine without having to log in with a monitor connected to it.
