I do not appear to be using the Nvidia X driver

Asked by scoter

ubuntu does not recognize my monitor and won't let me set the resolution higher than 800x600. I had installed the recommended nvidia proprietary drivers. Under System>Administration, there is an "nvidia x server settings" console. It gave me an alert that said "You do not appear to be using the nvidia x driver. Please edit your x configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig' as root), and restart the X server." Which I did, and ended up without an xserver at all. I got my xserver back now, but I think I'd like to be able to use the Nvidia X driver, and even more-so, I would like to set my monitor's resolution to its native rate -

You, me, and MANY others have had this problem. There are no open source drivers for NVIDIA graphics so the best you can do, if nothing else works for you, is fall back to the so-called "default driver" offered when Ubuntu starts up. After installing a new graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 6200 AGP) I still couldn't get the newer drivers to work and still cannot use 2D or 3D settings. At least I was able to get to 1280x1024 at 75Hz refresh rate. Many helpful people offered suggestions and I tried them all, including modifying the X server settings, using ENVYNG, etc. etc. but nothing helped. You may have better luck than I did, I sure hope so.
