screen resolution issues

Asked by higgs.timmy@googlemail.com

Hi,
I installed Ubuntu onto my laptop via wubi (2 and a half year old fujitsu siemens amilo series) and it seems to be working fine with the exception of one thing:
It has the screen resolution at 1600x1200 when my actual screen resolution is 1024x768, so i can only see the upper left portion of the desktop/any full screen apps. I tried changing the screen resolution in System-->preferences-->Screen Resolution but it just made the screen into a mess of lines.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Cheers
Tim

First please try to play with System→Preferences→Screen resolution

If this doesn't solve...

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

Please save a backup copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf before.... to do any other xorg command, type:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.back

Then type:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Then reboot your pc... retry with resolution menu...

Hope this helps

I suggest you to install Ubuntu NOT using Wubi.

If you have installed Ubuntu via Wubi please consdre to uninstall it read http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php

Installing Ubuntu using Wubi make Ubuntu less robust and all problems that you will have to Windows can be affect your Ubuntu partition file.

I strongly suggest you to install Ubuntu+Windows in dual mode creating a real Ubuntu ext3 partition.
In this mode you can use Ubuntu and Windows ad usual and then using installed Ubuntu you can save or repair damaged (due viruses or other issue) Windows partitions data.

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall (pretty the same for Ubuntu 8.10)

Is very easy to install, if you need info please ask.

Thank you

I did the wubi installation as i wasnt sure how much i would use ubuntu, as i have only really installed it so i can do the C programming course im on at the moment. if i like it, i will do a full install for sure.

I tried everything suggested so far and had no luck. as soon as i try and change the resolution it goes to lines with several images of the same thing left and right of each other and is very hard to change the resolution back as i can barely see whats on screen

Some months later...

Hi people,

I've done a full install now i have time, and found that it did the exact same thing (put screen resolution waaaay too big so most of the "screen" is off the side of my real screen, then make the screen turn to mush when i try and change it in system-->preferences-->display).
I tried all the fixes suggested here, and they did nothing. any further suggestions?

OK, after some more hunting i managed to find out the following info, however im too much of a novice to put it to any use...

laptop: fujitsu siemens L7320GW
graphics card: VIA unichrome pro

i found some drivers called openchrome which look promising, but i cant see how i would install them, or if this is likely to be a driver-related issue.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?
Can anybody please help me install them if not?
