my highest resolution is 800x600.

how do i get a better resolution. graphics card is SiS Mirage 3 Graphics. If I can get 1280x800 I would be glad

Are you using Xubuntu?

Have you tried
System - Preferences - Screen Resolution ?

Can you backup xorg.comf and then open it with a text editor (using sudo) and add some sensible resolutions to the relevant section copying the style used by the other resolutions listed?
