Xserver not updating: file has been customized

Asked by Biber

I have transferred my Harddrive with Ubuntu 6.10 (sic) to a different computer and can't get xserver to work.
I tried
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
confirmed all the defaults, and then got the result:
xserver -xorg postinst warning:
not updating /etc/X11/x; file has been customized

xserver -xorg postinst warning:
overwriting possibly-customized configuration file: backup in /etc/x11/xorg.conf.2009111104658

I would either need to fix the xserver, or I need someone to tell me how I can find my (Evolution) mail and address book using the command line. After retrieving those I intend to update Ubuntu anyway, and that may solve the problem.

Gigabyte motherboard GA-8SIMLH
Pentium 4A 2.4GHZ
Motherboard Chipset: SIS651
Videoadapter: SIS315
Video Memory: 32MB

Hope, someone can help!???

I also tried
sudo xfix - that I found somewhere on Launchpad, but got the message: command not found, maybe my Ubuntu is too old???

Hi,

As far as I can tell, some features of the hardware are detected during the install process. If you transfer the hard drive to another computer with a different hardware, some configuration features are misleading and it is likely not to work.

To fix the xserver, you might want to try to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and to set the video driver to "vesa". No warranty though.

I would advise to consider a fresh install from a CD of the most recent Ubuntu. It is much cleaner, in my opinion.

Hope this helps!

Hi Arnaudus,

thanks for your answer, but so far no luck.
I just want to find some emails and addresses before I do a fresh install. Any idea how I can find them using the command line?

Regards
Biber

Hi,

If I understand properly, you want to extract files or information from the old hard drive? Just put it in the old computer (or as a slave in an other one) and boot from the live CD (boot on the CD and choose "live session". You will then be able to mount your partitions and save the data, for instance on a flash drive.

Hope this helps!
