desktop too big, about 10mm cut off top and bottom

Asked by pete smout

just intalled 'ubuntu' for the first time, and although everything seems to work the desktop is slightly larger than my screen (an orion 32in hd tv, running from dvi out to hdmi). i can just about see the top edge of the bottom bar, and the bottom edge of the top bar. I had this problem on windows xp but my graphics card driver (nvidia geoforce2 i think), had a resize desktop option which solved it. any advice gratefully recieved.
thanks in advance

Set the display mode to match your HDTV. If it's a 720p TV, use 1280x720, not 1280x768. Also try different available sync frequencies. Although it should not matter for LCDs, I find it sometimes matters for my LCDTV.

resolution already set at 1280x720 and still loose top and bottom 'tool-bars' and can loose the sides of any maximized windows. other than this minor issue, have to say what a great system Ubuntu is.

Possibly a very silly question, but can't you also set the position etc. via the menu/osd of your screen?

pete smout (petersmout03) said :

unfortunately that facility is disabled on HDMI inputs! so no i can't alter screen position through screen menu / osd!

NoMoreWindows,

Please oppen a terminal windows,
in that window enter this command:

   cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | more

Scroll down slowly with the <Enter>-key, and find the place where Monitor Display and Screen are...
(beginning with lines
Section "Monitor" ...)

Can you copy and paste these lines here?
Then we can try to help you...

Was the osd question about physical buttons on the screens hardware. I'm still commited to CRt's but even on these the buttons can be hard to find. I imagine HD is made for people with pins instead of fingers and eyes that respond well to flush black buttons on black backgrounds? lol, wasnt there something about this in THHGttG?

Have you found a solution yet? I'm having a similar issue with my setup, a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD connected via DVI - HDMI to a EVGA GeForce 9800GT. I've tried the repository drivers for 177 and 180 both with the same effect. I've also tried installing 180.06, 180.18, and 180.22 manually in both Hardy and Intrepid and it's the same thing every time. Except I'm missing a strip the whole way around not just the top and bottom.

What do you get for when you run:
$ grep -i 'nvidia' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The DPI/EdidDPI line got me thinking that may be a cause because I've seen this crop up before, have a look at this forum post:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=81581

The last post suggests that the person found a solution to their problem, I'd try it out for myself but I'm at work right now so I'll be seeing if it works for my TV tonight and will post my findings.

The solution from that forum thread didn't do the trick for me but you may still want to try the suggestions to see if they help you at all. If you want to dig a bit deeper to see if there's any errors that aren't showing up in your log with the default logging level try going the console ctrl+alt+F1 and do

$ sudo killall gdm
$ startx -- -logverbose 6

let it load and then kill the X session by ctrl+alt+backspace and then at the terminal again

$ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This should show you a lot of information and some of that will be the various modelines that you could play around with to see if any work for you.

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.

If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved.

Good luck and many regards from
Tom :)

Hi nomorewindows, just in case you're still having this problem I thought I would post the solution that worked for me. It turned out to be the TV itself and not an Xorg setting at all, on my remote control there is a button 'Display Mode' and I had to cycle through the options for 'Dot-by-dot', once I changed that everything was fine.

Can you help with this problem?
