Have you tried:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

?

Hi,

It's not clear from your message whether you don't have any xorg.conf file (title) or a blank file. Are we talking about the same file? /etc/X11/xorg.conf

As far as my understanding goes, 8.10 uses xorg7.4, which does not use xorg.conf any more. But I could be wrong.

Id do 'locate xorg.conf' to make sure your looking for the the file in the right place.

thanks for the quick answer - i have tried dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg but when i look inside the xorg file is pretty empty. just generic things. i can't really access the GUI since i have to boot from an external monitor and it looks like static but with multiple colors. so i can only run in recovery mode.
i think i'm coming to the conclusion that my installation failed and didn't add any of my hardware since i had to manually set my network settings and my DNS. also searching online i have found that there are a lot of problems setting up my laptop (inspiron 8200) and I'm not saying the problems can't be solved but I can't seem to find a sample xorg for my geforce 4 go.
