How to use/overide xorg.conf in Intrepid

Asked by fabfab

I've read a number of posts on the now (->in Intrepid) vanilla xorg.conf file. I found that everything works ok with the plug&play server, installed system from scratch right from the CD, no tweaking, X comes up just fine. BUT, 1024x768 only, and I think no 3D acceleration (it's hard to say on my 5 year old Thinkpad R40 with ATI Mobility Radeon M7).

Trying to understand:
1. How do I determine which driver is being used, given my vanilla xorg.conf?
2. The comments in the xorg.conf suggest that even if I make changes there, these will be ignored. So how do I override the "automatically configured by server" piece? Comments on this forum have stated that any changes "might be ignored anyway".

The 1024 x 768 resolution might be a hardware limitation of your Laptops LCD.

As far as desktop effects are concerned, your driver has been blacklisted by compiz. To enable desktop effects you will have to edit your compiz configurations file.

See this thread at Ubuntu Forums for details

Hope this helps

Most setting in xorg.conf work like before. The keyboard settings go to /etc/default/console-setup now (or use sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup). Just try, /var/log/Xorg.0.log will tell you if it worked.

To get a higher resolution you may need to set HorizSync and VertRefresh in the Monitor section.

When I had a R40 a few years ago there wasn't any 3D acceleration, but that may have changed.
