Problems with NVIDIA after upgrading to 8.10

Asked by Marcus

I just upgraded to 8.10 and am having problems with screen resolution. I'm running 8.10 on a Compaq Presario 700. The kernel that is loading is 2.624-21-generic & the system runs in low graphic mode. I get the following errors when booting up:

NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system and that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly. It aborts and states that screen(s) have been found but none have a usable configuration.

The NVIDIA accelerated graphic driver 177 is installed and activated. The NVIDIA X-Server Settings gives an error message of 'Run nvidia-xconfig as root" (which I have done). The screen resolution is 800x600 4:3 and there is not option to increase this resolution.

I've been troubleshooting this issue for over 8 hours following all of the instructions that I can find on the web. I've tried to recompile the kernel module for NVIDIA without success.

Any suggestions on how I can get my notebook functioning? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I've decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04 as I can't figure out why the upgrade didn't work on my notebook. It worked on my desktop however.

Similar problem here. I'll report independently. Also here, one successful upgrade, one complete fail. Be warned!
Here I tried all I could think of, nvidia-xconfig, rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Xorg -configure. None of them would even bring up a basic GUI.
nvidia-xconfig says it has 177 installed, but a kernel module of 96. I never installed that, never changed my hardware and it worked before the upgrade.
