My display became useless

Asked by romeo mamisay

Just installed Ubuntu 8-10 RC an hour ago. I could not see the bottom panel and when I changed the display resolution it became garbage even after a reboot. What should I do. PS. I am a neophyte in UBUNTU.

Hi Romeo,

have a look here, this explains how to change such basic settings like the video mode at boot time:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

You willneed to know to which value to change your video mode. Her eis a list of possible values:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers

Good luck (I am myself new to Ubuntu).

What have you tried exactly? Did it have no effect at all?

While I am no Ubuntu expert myself, from the description in the article I would guess that
pressing esc while boot starts and then e for edit command line and then adding a
vga=771
boot option at the end should at least give you some very basic VGA screen resolution,
which your computer should be able to handle and you could then change more from
within that session.

Kaibuntu,
Many thanks again. I guess my mistake was instead of entering "vga=" I entered "vesa=". After that, I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 8-10 and my system is again up and running. I must admit that I have to focus more time to learn more about the system and seek help from the community whenever problems arise. I appreciate your messages very much.
