NVidia graphics driver in too high resolution to display on monitor

Asked by Peter Strong

Somehow my NVidia graphics driver has entered a reolution that my monitor will not display. Boots OK and I can enter my username and password on Ubuntu startup screens - but when my user settings are invoked my display tells me the resolution is not supported.

How can I boot into a safe mode so I can reduce the NVidia resolution to default or something safe or use the default Ubuntu graphics driver. I've tried using the boot CD and F4 and using Safe Graphics Mode but that doesn't make any difference when I boot from first hard drive.

Thanks

Try to press ctrl + "+" and/or ctrl + alt + "-" to change dynamically your pc to a low or high video resolution.

Then make login and play with your screen resolution settings.

System → Preferences → Screen resolution

Hope this helps

Sorry this doesn't work.

The PC is dual boot and the resolution of 1680x1050 works fine on Windows XP SP2. But after normal logon and password screens in Ubuntu my monitor reports "Resolution not supported".

Can you try to press previous ctrl + alt + "+" and ctrl + alt + "-" when you have done the login, when you get "Resolution not supported".

Thank you

OK I have resolved this now by using the "Recovery Mode" boot option from Grub and using "Try to fix xServer". This removes the nVidia driver and leaves a default graphics driver with a default resolution that works fine.
