stuck in 800 x 600 max

Asked by J Posey

I can edit my xorg.conf file so that my display will run at any supported resolution and refresh rate combination I specify --- but only for the login screen. As the full Debian-Gnome-Gutsy desktop starts, dexconf replaces my xorg.conf and leaves me with a maximum 800 x 600 resolution. Until today, I could fix this with "Screens and Graphics" (gksu displayconfig-gtk), but no longer. Sometimes the password screen does not appear, although gksu appears in System Monitor as "sleeping". If it does appear, or if I run sudo displayconfig-gtk in a terminal, it finishes by requiring all users to logoff (this happened for the first time today, although I've done nothing different). This does not work except in the login screen, because starting the desktop trashes the new setting. Monitor Resolution Settings does not detect my monitor, and allows a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 to be selected. The monitor is a ViewSonic VA903b. The same hardware worked fine before Hardy. I've been sticking with VESA through all this, although I have an nVidia card.
How can I specify my monitor's properties where dexconf can find them?

I'm not sure what I managed to change after posting my question, but I'm now back to having a 1280 x 1024 Login screen, with the desktop coming up at 800 x 600, but able to change with gksu displayconfig-gtk. Would rather have the higher resolution automatically.
