Ubuntu won't let me change to a higher screen resolution even if my monitor and video card supports it.

Asked by ernie1024

I have a Dell M681s CRT Monitor. I am using a Nvidia 8800GT GPU. Ubuntu 8.04 LTS won't let me change me screen resolution to anything higher than 1024*768. What's going on; and how do i fix it? I need someone to help me download the xorg GUI so I can change me screen's resolution. Everytime I go through the xorg config, I does not let me change the screen's resolution. Xorg lists my monitor as "Unknown". I'm a newb to Ubuntu so I really need help with xorg. I find this "xorg" concept difficult and confusing to understand!

Thanks for everybody's support. I realized all I had to do was run this simple command to get the xorg-GUI:
"gksu displayconfig-gtk". From there, it was a piece of cake!
