how to enble keyboard?????

hi,
    one of my friend is using ubuntu 8.04. his machine is powered by intel centrino due 64X.for a couple of days i didnt face any problem. all the updates were made. but today evening i cant enter the user name to enter furter. touch pad in his laptop is also not working. i think there might be some problem with the keyboard and mouse interface.but while connecting external mouse its working. the default touch pad of the laptop is not working. how to solve this problem. is there any alternate way to enable this. *he is using dual OS (Vista home edition).*
please help me...........

What is the model of the laptop?

Have you checked the bios to make sure the touchpad and such have not been disabled by mistake?

lenovo 3000 Y500
intel centrino duo 64X
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
having windows vista home edition
and now trying to use ubuntu 8.04.

could u please help me out of this problem ?????

Please tell: can you boot in recovery mode...?

Press ESC when you see the GRUB row... and select the
- Ubuntu .... (recovery mode)

Are your keyboard working in that starting mode...?

If yes please give me some feedback

We need to modify the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but you must get a working keyboard to do it.

thank you very much "marcobra". its working now.
i enabled the master boot password. so after entering the password i continuously pressed the esc key. then i cant find the grub loading window. then i got the log in screen and now i can work in it. but if i am not doing this and allowing to load the grub menu then its not working. so each time while loading i want to press the esc key continuously.......
why i cant boot normally,as i do in my laptop ??
what might be the problem ???
please describe simply as i could understand......
