Dual Monitor for ATI Radeon X1650 not recognised

Asked by Andrew

My Setup: Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy)
Kernel Linux 2.6.24-19-generic
GNOME 2.22.3
Video Card: SAPPHIRE 100198L Radeon X1650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X
Monitors: Samsung SyncMaster 225BW, widescreen (DVI); NEC MultiSync LCD 1760V (VGA)

I recently installed the OS fresh. The only changes I made are to get the Xserver to work right with the accelerated drivers; I added this to the end of the xorg.conf file (based on Ubuntu forum advise):
-------------------------------------------------
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "disable"
EndSection
-------------------------------------------------

At this point the video card and both monitors work, but are cloned rather than extended.

Proprietary drivers, 3D acceleration, OpenGL Direct Rendering, and Catalyst Control Center are not working. I went to the ATI website and downloaded and installed their packages. Here is a section of my xorg.conf file:
-------------------------------------------------
Section "Device"
 Identifier "Configured Video Device"
 Option "MergedFB" "true"
 Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS (TMDS), CRT"
 Option "CRT2Hsync" "30-65"
 Option "CRT2VRefresh" "50-75"
 Option "OverlayOnCRTC2" "true"
 Option "CRT2Position" "LeftOf"
 Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024-1280x1024"
 #Option "MergedXineramaCRT2IsScreen0" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Configured Monitor"
Horizsync 28-64 #You may wish to change the values to fit your specific monitor
 Vertrefresh 43-75
EndSection

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Default Screen"
 Monitor "Configured Monitor"
 Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
-------------------------------------------------

Using the rescue auto detect function will break the Xserver on login without the extra section from above. As I have it right now, it works but does not have full functionality (i.e. 3D acceleration, OpenGL Direct Rendering, and extended desktop) and the monitors are still cloned. I would at minimum like the extended desktop, but would also like OpenGL and 3D acceleration.

Thank you in advance for your help!

This is still an issue. Why is is so difficult for me to get support? No responses on the forum... no responses on Launchpad.

I think if you use Linux Mint you must ask for support here http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/

Thank you
