Ubuntu usplash and login and gnome not visible just a blank black screen shown after boot.

Asked by UBUNTU 8.10

This bug happened after I left my router off without realizing and so I was trying to get the network working and the computer became frozen. I then noticed the router turned it on and restarted the computer, which resulted in the starting grub but then no usplash to follow just a blank black screen with no sounds if I typed in my login. The computer would only stay on this black screen.

if you are in trouble with screen graphic user interface (usually the screen is black with a blinking cursor or screen out of range message):
- first try to dynamically change screen resolution please the press CTRL + ALT + "+" and/or CTRL + ALT + "-"
- then try to restart the graphic layer press CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE

If this don't solve please try also to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and make login with your user and password:
then try to update your pc if you are connected to the net type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get autoremove

then please reboot your system, type

sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Also I would like to note that sometimes after maybe a hundred boots or on some days it will boot completely fine and the grub I think says updated when that happens

Yes I can select kernel recovery mode but it doesn't make any difference.
Plus I've now changed over to a beta for intrepid while it was on one of the working times but it didn't help.

Excuse me for my english but i'm not very well enough. When I start on the pc, the screen on the my two
monitors is black with the blinking cursor, but after reboot, if i try recovery mode and then:

- try "xfix" --> menù recovery mode

- try "resume" --> menù recovery mode

- the login apperars but only in one monitor and then i press "alt+f1" and then restore my xorg backup with

- sudo cp /etc/xorg.conf_backup xorg.conf

and then ctrl+alt+backspace or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

magically the login will appears and the two monitor is functioning very well. But i do this every time, if i
try without recovery mode, the screen is always black.

My kernel is 2.6.27-3 on ubuntu 8.10 alpha 5. I have the intel quad core q6600, nvidia geforce 8800 gts 512 mb,
a raid with 2 western digital 250 gb, 1 sata 250 gb western digital, 1 quantum fireball 200 gb, 4 gb ddr3 xtreem.

I have no problem with ubuntu 8.04, either after upgrade with ubuntu 8.10, but after installing driver nvidia, i
have always black screen.

Can you help with this problem?
