i have an acer extensa 5420 laptop and my vga output function is not working

vga output for my acer extensa 5420 seems to be working, it is my first time trying it and i always thought it would work but it doesnt. i want to connect the computer to a television.

Have you tried to switch screens with Fn keys ? Usually there is a switch screens keys combo.. like Fn+F5 , and you can switch screens .. Connect the cable and apply the combination .. and see.
