Monitor resolution Problems on Ubuntu 12.10

Am new to Ubuntu world and have recently installed version 12.10, and seems to work well, but problem i am having is that I cannot change the screen resolution above 1360x768, which means that launcher bar is missing and other parts of the screen do not show either. Images appear slightly pixelated as monitor is 22in.

I am using Nvidia Geforce GT610 graphics card and have not had any issues before with it before installing. Had correct resolution with Win 7 previously.

Have tried display and monitor settings from the system but highest one that it shows is same as above. Am using the additional drivers from the software centre but no joy in resolution change.

Any help / assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | grep nvidia; cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -I model

Tried the above command and now my screen is reverted to 640x480 resolution with no other resolutions options. Anyway to revert back to previous.

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
sudo dpkg -P nvidia-current
sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-current-updates nvidia-settings
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

Tried the above commands via terminal however after rebooting, am still getting same 640x480 resolution with no option to change. Have read few a Ubuntu help lines and have seen some comments about deleting xorg file. Not sure where to find this.

Your Terminal output shows the following, useful warning message:

I suggest connecting the monitor using an HDMI or DVI cable and not using a VGA cable.

I also suggest adding a Modes configuration in the SubSection "Display" part of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as described here (to force the use of the correct resolution):
