Why have remote X clients slowed down in Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04?

Asked by tweej

I have Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04, 11.10, and 12.04 machines with identical hardware on the same network. Various applications (meld, nedit, kate, open office, etc...) are run by remote users via X over ssh.

All applications are quick and responsive when using 8.04 and 10.04 machines, but most of those same applications are much slower on 11.10 and slower still on 12.04 machines. Startup is slower, scrolling is much slower, and with kate and meld specifically there is a multiple second delay between keystroke or mouse click and client application respone.

This does not appear to be a network issue. The machines are not under load during the time the slowness was observed. Disabling and changing encryption and enabling compression does not produce different results.

The versions of the client applications are different between the different versions of Ubuntu, but I find it hard to believe that they are different enough to produce the vast performance difference I'm experiencing. Additionally, applications that do not use GTK+ do not appear to be slower on 11.10 and 12.04. Kate runs faster with -graphicssystem native.

Have you tried adding compression to the connection with the -C option (capital C).

May help speed things up

Yes, diabling and changing encryption and enabling compression does not produce different results.
