Ubuntu 12.04.1 is booting without GUI after install

Asked by Jake Green

I've just installed 12.04.1 using the ISO file from the site (after burning image to a disc from another computer) but it is booting straight into command mode and, as somebody who is completely new to Ubuntu and Linux in questions, I'm unsure of what to do next in order to reach the 'normal' GUI mode.
The installation seemed to go fine and the GUI is visible right up until the end of the boot, where it switches to the command mode and I am prompted to enter my username and pass.
Does anybody know how to correct this?

Did you install the server or the desktop OS?

Try:

sudo service lightdm start

After trying that, it brings up a bunch of text and says that it's starting LightDm, but it never moves on from this page.

Tried running it using a different graphics card and it started up straight away. I guess that solves the problem.
