If you run:

apt-cache policy ubuntu-desktop

Do you see a versin number next to the work: Installed

?

I rebooted and now the computer it stuck on a blue screen asking me about graphics modes - non responsive.

I don't know the video chip. Does anyone know the command to open the CD tray?

You should have a small hole in the tray which you can shove a paperclip in to release

In the command line interface you can run:

sudo lshw -C display

And it will tell you.
