i'm getting black screen at boot...

lately ubuntu wasnt able to install packages, nothing worked so i restarted the machine, and now it wont boot...i have tried a live cd but all it does is making the loading screen appear for a little while and then it goes dark. any suggestions on what i should do?

it shows the ordinary grub menu, but when i start it normally or in recovery mode, the screen goes black after a couple of seconds (when i start on recovery or the ordinary start-up
