Ubuntu Server 12.04 screen resolution problem

Asked by martino

I installed Ubuntu Server i386 12.04 on a PC with ASUS Motherboard "P8H61-M LE" after that i moved the PC to the server room and connected it to an old monitor, that shows only garbled lines. After these changes to the /etc/default/grub file:

#GRUB_TERMINAL=console ---> GRUB_TERMINAL=console
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 ---> GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
---> GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep (or GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text)

i get the old monitor display correctly all the grub phase after power-on, but when the "server login:" should appear, the display is again garbled. Her some more info:

Good document, but it seems related to Ubuntu Desktop, non Ubuntu Server.

Its the same difference really, it causes the fb driver to be used and should be better, could also try the boot option:

nomodeset

HTH
