How to get PERSISTENT dual monitor config in 12.04?

Asked by Ashrael

I always use my netbook with my external monitor attached. When I boot my netbook with the external screen attached I get the loginscreen on both displays, so far so good. But when I login I get two black screens with a mousepointer only.... Then I remove the vga connector and wait for Xorg to switch back. Then I need to plug it in again, and it might be allright, might.

How can I get rid of this stupid behavoir? It should remember my settings! How can I get it to do this?

TIA!

xrandr is your tool.
The output can be written in a xorg.conf (system wide), .xprofile or
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/45custom_xrandr-settings (single user).

Or just activate it by the cmd and place it in 'startup applications' (~/.config/autostart)
xrandr --auto

Some user wrote a script to switch between laptop and external monitor.

Not sure if xrandr GUIs are useful.
