ubuntu 10.10 black screen at boot

on restarting my ubuntu 10.10 machine the Os was not loading just after the grub loading page i see a black screen detecting all the peripherals attached but the booting never seems to come to completion,I do not want to format the harddrive
I am trying to reboot my ubuntu machine but the boot process doesnt seem to end,after the grub loading page where I choose my Os ,a black screen appears that detects all the peripherals attached like the mouse,keyboard scanner but the process doesnt conclude.I do not have a memory stick attached to it.
