My pc screen does not work

When I power on the laptop, I hear the melody as if the computer turned on but the screen itself stays black. I see nothing...please help! I have tried to reboot but that doesn't seem to help.

What make and model laptop? Why did you not mention this in your initial question.....

when did this occur ? after update/upgrading !
