Just upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04. Upon booting screen keeps switching between startup and mouse screen.

Asked by Mohamed Turan Boodhoo

I just upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04. I have a dell E5410 which runs solely on Ubuntu. Upon booting after the upgrade, the screen keeps switching between the mouse and startup message screens.

I don't know what the problem is. I tried going on recovery mode but I can't do so because most of my startup messages are covered when the system loads.

Please advise on what the problem may be. I am not sure if there is a graphic card in the system.

The system does not reach the login screen.
I really need my computer to boot up and haven't made a backup of my files.

Please note: I meant bootup screen and mouse screen. Upon booting after the upgrade, the screen keeps switching between the mouse and bootup message screens.

I would use the live-CD to boot and run Ubuntu. I would then browse to your home directory and copy the entire directory to another storage device as a backup. Sadly, it is always dangerous to do an upgrade and some of us have requested strong warnings in future. I am fairly certain that you are going to have to do a fresh install, but provided you don't do anything else, your data should be intact on your hard drive at the moment. Whatever you do, don't try anything else with your installation until you have rescued all your data.

Hello Mohamed,

if you have already tried to run os in comand line or non graphic mode. You can access it by pressing ctrl+alt+{1-6} buttons. If there goes all right you might have problems with drivers. If non of this works then you will probably have to do fresh install as Barry said before. I have similar problems to yours and I didn't found any solutions for this problem.

Regards,
Miha
