After successful installation on a Think Pad, the system wont start. Just get flashing cursor.

Asked by Joseph Lambert

I have succesfully installed Ubuntu 11.10 on an IBM Think Pad from a disc and got network connection.

I had difficulty finding how to switch the laptop off since there was no obvious on/off button on the desktop screen toi click on to. When attempting to restart after shutting down with the laptop on/off button, the system just hangs showing only a flashing cursor.

How to I reactivate Ubuntu?

It's a Think Pad X30 series with Intel Pentium III processor. The flashing cursor (horizontal ) does not react to any keystrokes at all.
