Wrong screen resolution at boot

Asked by Lewis Frazee

Using 10.04LTS. New HD monitor. Boots to 1440x900. Have to manually adjust to 1920x1080. Restart throws it back to 1440x900 every time. Only does this with Samsung HD monitor. ASUS HD monitor boots properly into HD resolution. Help! I am a supergeek and can vi edit the xorg.conf file if that will help. Not enough of a supergeek to know how to edit that file.

Please see this guide:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Setting_XRandR_changes_persistently
I prefer the 3rd solution(in the above guide) because if edits resulted into 'Blank' screen, you can reconfigure your x by rebooting into 'Recovery Mode' then use the root shell to reconfigure it with 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg'.
Also, please take a look at the 'Introduction' part here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#How_to_set_up_a_dual_monitor
Hope this will help.

I edited the xorg.conf - added "virtual" and it did not work.
There is no .xconfig file in my home directory.
There is a .profile file in my home directory.

Can anyone help me with this matter?
I can vi edit the xorg.conf file if I just knew what needs to be in that file.
I can create a .xconfig file in my home directory if I just have an example of what should go into it.

Please help

Please help - I tried something "insane". I deleted all of the icons off of the desktop. I rebooted the computer and it, then, asked me for my preferred screen resolution???????????? REALLY????? I selected the correct resolution and the system has, subsequently, booted properly every time. I added back in all of the icons, and, it still boots properly. I am totally confused. Any idea why this "fix" fixed the "problem"?
