Your monitor should not require downloaded drivers -- under linux drivers are included in the core of the system for most major devices.

Normally if you are experiencing video problems, it is not the monitor driver that needs to be altered, but rather the video card driver, for which sometimes the proprietary drivers offer better performance and features than the as-shipped linux drivers. (Linux cannot ship drivers from manufacturers, unless they provide the driver "source code" freely).

Are you currently experiencing any difficulties with your monitor?

thanks for responding .... no problems with the monitor on my net/notebook, but i can't get the external monitor to be recognized. the external screen says "no signal" then goes blank. when i click on the monitor symbol at the top of my screen it says "rotation not supported". do you have any thoughts? can you help me?

OK, we need to get some system information. Most certainly the problem is that your video card is simply not outputting, and the monitor is fine, but the video card settings are problematic

With the external monitor plugged in, can you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run these commands (you can cut and paste, please press enter after you are done to ensure you run the final command) :

uname -a
lsb_release -a
xrandr
lspci
lsmod

Then cut and paste the results back here? Can you also post the model and make of your laptop.

it looks like it's not letting me cut and paste ... i think the guys that set it up has it set up like that for security reasons. so i typed in the first line and got:
Linux HANANS- NETBOOK 2.6.35- 31- generic #63-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 28 19:23:11 UTC 20
11 i686 GNU/Linux
hanhabhan@HANANS- NETBOOK:-$[enye, symbol above first n in spanish word mañana]$ [up pointing hat looking symbol]C
hanhabhan@HANANS- NETBOOK:-$[enye, symbol above first n in spanish word mañana]$ [up pointing hat looking symbol]C
hanhabhan@HANANS- NETBOOK:-$ [open rectangle for inputting again]

and that is just after i manually typed in uname -a

what do you think?

hanan, you should be able to *copy and paste*, I should have been more clear. If you have a three button mouse, highlighting the text, then pressing middle mouse button to paste will work (as long as you don't highlight anything else in the meantime)

I had one thought -- you might be trying to copy with Ctrl+C -- which wont work, as this is set to "cancel". After making your selection, try using the right click menu or the menu bar at the top (edit->copy)

It looks like your card is not properly supported by the open source "radeon" drivers, and has gone back to a compatibility mode. This fall-back mode probably won't support multiple monitors (I'm guessing a little here, but it seems right).

Running a search with your video card model from the result you provided (ATI 9802), the "fglrx" driver, which I would normally recommend might be buggy with your video card, so I recommend to use ATI's "catalyst" driver. Unfortunately, unlike the fglrx driver, the install procedure isn't just a few clicks away.

Fortunately, there is an installer from ATI, which the following commands will download and run automatically - this will only work if you are not behind a proxy server (if you don't know what that is, just try it anyway, can't hurt).

Before you do anything further, note that if the driver install fails (it probably will be fine, but lets be on the safe side) you should ensure you have backed up your important data to somewhere you can get to it (eg usb key, external disk, network storage). The driver install process is undo-able, but you may need to go through "recovery mode" (terminal only) if there is a problem.

Open a terminal again, then paste these commands. You will be prompted for your password, when you type it in there will be no output, and you will see if your password is entered in correctly once you press enter. If you do not enter it correctly, you will have another 2 attempts.

cd ~
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libqtgui4
wget "http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-12-x86.x86_64.run"
sudo sh ati-driver-installer-11-12-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/maverick
sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb
sudo aticonfig --initial

Once the commands complete, you will need to reboot.

If you get stuck, please post back.
