Ubuntu 8.04 could not identify my new monitor - Sumsung Syncmaster P2570HD. Started in low graphics mode.

Asked by B. Qually

Ubuntu 8.04 could not identify my new monitor - Sumsung Syncmaster P2570HD. Started in low graphics mode.

I changed to one of the widescreen modes and now the display is scrambled.

Start-up screen is in full 1080HD but the log in screen comes up scrambled - impossible to work on.

My old monitor is scrambled too.

I have the virtual consol running but need proper command sequence to change monitor settings.

Help.

if you use <ctrl><alt>+ or <ctrl><alt>- (+ and - on the numeric keypad) you might be able to rotate through available resolutions that will work with your monitor. Once you have screen that is working well enough to see, open up the display settings and see if you can select a more correct resolution for the monitor.

I also note that support for 8.04 ran out in May this year. You might try the latest LTS release, 10.04, and see if it supports your hardware a little better. (it should).

Then again if you can get 8.04 working well enough to use, the next LTS release is due out in just over four months.

Thanks Chris, but this -<ctrl><alt>+ or <ctrl><alt>- did not work. I tried downloading 10.04 but it locked up on installation. Now, until I can read the monitor I can do nothing.

I don't think there should be any reason for 8.04 to work but 10.04 to lock up. Can your run off the LiveCD OK? Did you check the MD5sum of the downloaded ISO.

Run the CD integrity test from the first menu that comes up and make sure the CD is without errors.

Hardy is no longer supported on the desktop, only server. I suggest you upgrade to Lucid for support on the desktop, alternatively install a clean Oneiric for the latest stable release....

Can you help with this problem?
