11.10 Display help !!! White horizontal lines

Asked by Jeremy Strubinger

Fixing a emprex bnb-1021 for a friend. She received the notebook about a year ago used it for approximatly a month and did an update for ubuntu and it crashed the computer. flash forward to today. I put ubuntu on a usb drive and installed 11.10 Fresh but upon reboot It has white horizontal lines on the screen and what I can see in the background looks big. I can hook up an external monitor and reboot the computer and everything looks fine except there is no pointer on the notebook screen. I can unhook the monitor from the notebook and still no pointer. reboot and the white lines are back. I am new to ubuntu and not sure what is causing this. the notebook is usless if an external monitor has to be hooked too it. any ideas ??

If you press CTRL+ALT+T you will start a terminal and can run commands there. Get the system hooked up to the web and run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y upgrade; sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

Then try rebooting, may help the situation to get fully updated. If not then try adding the boot option:

nomodeset

This may help
