update to xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core broke compiz

Asked by Michael Tanner

Update manager made several updates yesterday. After restarting, compiz no longer was working to provide, effects, transparency, etc... I first noticed it because Cairo-Dock had a big black rectangle behind it.

From the update log...

Preparing to replace xserver-common 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6 (using .../xserver-common_2%3a1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8_all.deb) ...^M
Unpacking replacement xserver-common ...^M
Preparing to replace xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6 (using .../xserver-xorg-core_2%3a1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8_i386.deb) ...^M
Unpacking replacement xserver-xorg-core ...^M

Downgrading to the previous version of xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core resolved the issue. But that is not a real solution. For now I have locked those versions until I find a real solution to the problem.

I am on a Gateway laptop running Lucid Lynx. It has an Intel graphics processor.

Any ideas?

No solution, but Unity 3d crashed after the update on my Asus 1005HA netbook. Reverting to the earlier xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core similarly resolved the problem. Also noted a large black rectangle around Cairo-Dock in a Gnome session, although everything else functioned normally in Gnome.

Latest version (7.10) of the two packages addresses this issue.

Unhappily, the 7.10 update still kills Unity on my Asus

Eh... problem is back. What I don't understand is why it worked one day but the problem returned after subsequent reboots.

I put my machine at your command. Just tell me if you need me to run something.

Revert to the earlier xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core and using synaptic try to hold/pin these 2 packages

reverting xserver-common seems to remove xserver-xorg-core and 41 other packages.

I had to mark xserver-xorg-core first. Reverting xserver-common first resulted in the removal of 41 other packages...

However, while running the 7.10 release of the packages I was able to the make everything work by pressing Reload Window Manager on the compiz Fusion icon. Weird.

Can you help with this problem?
