touch pad &mouse freezes after sometime in ubuntu

 The mouse pointer and the touch pad pointer freezes after some time when using Ubuntu o/s.I am unable to open or access any applications or pro-grammes.I have to shut down and power on all over again to open the O/S.
Will powering on ans off like this damage the HDD?
The pointer freeze(Mouse & Touch Pad) keep on happening.Can anybody assist me overcome this problem
Is this a hardware or software problem?
I have Ubuntu 10.04(Lucid). installed on a Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop.
Appreciate any advice/guidance

Does the same happen in the natty live CD?
