Hi,
run this: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and this: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
and reboot.

Thanks BabyGeek,

It says gdm is broken or not fully installed, tried reboot but its still comes up with Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode and nothing after that works?

Hi Alan,

I would try a complete reinstall and see if that fixes the problem. First, download another iso image from a different mirror site and burn it to a new dvd and try that.

Did you get this issue after installation ? What version of Ubuntu are you using ( 10.04.3 or 11.04) ?

This all happened after running an update from 10.04.3 to 11.04, first the desktop panel went and when I got the information to fix that this issue cropped up!

Update-manager is far from being perfect, when you have to change of distro. Paul's solution is a good one. Now, Natty has an option to reinstall system files, without touching user files. Boot on Natty media (CD or USB) and choose "Upgrade operating system". It will be probably more faster than trying to repair gdm, and something else after...
If you still have issue, what is graphic card/chipset model ?

Can you help with this problem?
