I have updated my laptop and now the desktop is blank, how do I restore this?

If you can get through the Terminal, input the following commands below:

sudo apt-get autoremove gnome-*
sudo apt-get autoremove ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get autoremove gdm
sudo apt-get autoremove nautilus*
(reboot)
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
(reboot)
