Installed Ubuntu 11.10 cannot get monitor to display properly

Asked by okietech

Compaq Presario desktop, HP wl858 monitor
downloaded latest monitor drivers after standard ubuntu install did not work for the monitor
Keep getting the message "input signal out of range 1366x768 60hz"
I go into monitor setup and change and apply etc.

when I turn off, I am right back to the same error message. sometimes parts of the screen get scrambled usually the top couple lines.

Like Ubuntu but this is a pain to deal with.

appreciate any help to solve this before I give up and go back to Vista (which I do not want to do)

Dave

thanks for the help

I have attempted to get into GRUB but all I can do so far is get to the boot in device, not getting any option to edit grub to do the nomodeset change to quiet splash
