same problem here.

when i run both screens with native resolution (laptop: 1024x768, external 1680x1050) there are the same display issues as described above. if i have both monitors set to the same resolution 1024x768 everything seems to work right.

I'm having the same issues here, when using dual monitors xorg is extremely unstable and doesn't render desktop/panels on 2nd monitor.

Same problem here, My displaysget totally messed up (diagonal lines) It looks like all the graphic elements are shaked up like a sand window.

When I plug the second monitor in, it looks like the resolution is fine, but the laptop's monitor gets a black bar that doesn't show anything across the top of the screen.

I have the same problem regardless if I use the same lower resolution (1280x1024) on both monitors or if I use the native resolution on each (1600x1200 & 1280x1024).

Just tried this. Doesn't resolve the problem.

no worky... also, this seems to depend on the external display's resolution (same Acer Aspire One as before):
* on the 1440x900 Fujitsu Siemens monitor I usually use, I get the behaviour described by the OP (both screens garbled, diagonal lines)
* on the 1600x1200 Dell monitor I have on my desktop machine, the image is OK, but there is something black covering the top part of the laptop monitor, as Andrew (#7) described; also, the top bar is displayed twice on the laptop monitor, once where it's supposed to be (and it works, but menus are covered by the black thing), and once where the black thing ends (most likely a display artefact, doesn't respond to clicks)

I have tried a live image on my workhorse eeePC, and it's the same; also, on my girlfriend's Dell e4310 work computer (Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller) things seem to work mostly fine (there is copy of the top bar that appears across the middle of the laptop screen, but it vanishes on redraw / when a window is moved)

there seems to be a general problem with the i915 module.
switching to my external display is resulting in either black displays with a mouse cursor or in half the display black. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is being spammed by the following message:

I am experiencing something similar as damaex using an "00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)". I will attach xorg log files next time it happens.

On 10.10 it was fine; I could switch external displays on and off, and dock/undock without worry.

On 11.04 both displays (internal and external) are black. Usually I can see a mouse pointer. Usually I can switch to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+F5) and restart gdm; sometimes I cannot and have to do a hard reset.

apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
apt-get install xserver-xorg-core

cp /etc/apt/source.list /etc/apt/source.list.old
now replace your new source.list with your old one from Ubuntu 10.10

apt-get update
apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

This wil install the xserver-xorg-video-intel from 10.10
now reboot

now you need to put the xorg upgrades on hold.

# for pkg in $(apt-get -s upgrade | grep ^Inst | awk '{print $2}'); do echo "$pkg hold" | dpkg --set-selections ;done

This solved my problem hope it helps.

this doesn't solve the actual problem, it's a (hacky) workaround; a
cleaner way to do it is using APT pinning:

/etc/apt/preferences.d/10xorg:

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Pin: release v=10.10
Pin-Priority: 1100

/etc/apt/sources-list.d/xorg-maverick.list:

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick restricted main
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick restricted main

apt-get update
aptitude upgrade (will downgrade the necessary packages)

Yes that is a cleaner fix what i wrote above was a quick work around till they fix the problem.
But again it solved my problem.

@Sabin The APT pinning does not work for me, there is now upgrades/downgrades for me after "apt-get update" and "aptitude upgrade". Do you have any info on how I can debug this?

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-video-intel

it seems aptitude upgrade doesn't downgrade everything, indeed... in the
end I had to do

aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-intel

which complained that some dependencies will be broken, I chose the 3rd
proposed solution (the one that downgrades 30-something packages)

however, this fixed the problem only partially (no more diagonal lines,
but half the screen black and generally moving like crap); I'll be
trying to selectively downgrade compiz stuff when I have time, to see if
this fixes anything; however, it seems unity has a hard dependency on
the compiz-core that comes with natty (wtf?), so it won't be easy

in the mean time, Robin's solution is what will probably work, if you
don't mind getting the Maverick version of Unity (which was extremely
slow on the netbook I tested it on back in the day, I ended up
installing unity2d to have an usable computer)

I'm having a similar problem with my ThinkPad x201 w/docking station. After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, dual displays stopped working, and can even freeze my computer. Simply attaching the second monitor's analog VGA cable to the docking station will cause a black screen, sometimes with a solitary immobile mouse cursor, and when attached at boot the machine freezes.

Look, I appreciate all the help with hacks. I am not retarded an work with Linux and It since centuries.
I can hack my way out of this situation but I want a official update from Ubutu fixing my issues.

I can write a Xorg.conf for my x220 and make it work but the standard package doesn't work.

Similar problem here. Acer Timelinex laptop, 4820T ZQ1B with Intel HD graphics.

If I boot without the second monitor plugged in, then after logging in plug in the monitor, it works. (albeit without any advanced graphics support).

So, how do we know if / when someone at ubuntu/xorg is working on this?

this bug is related to my problem also, I think. I have a Compaq Mini CQ10 with Intel graphics.
I use the VGA output to connect it to my TV set (Panasonic 37" Plasma). Worked fine under 10.10 but after upgrade to Natty i get similar problems like some graphics not being rendered etc. It also doesn't detect my TV's native resulotion, I can only go as high as 1024x768 (4:3). The only success i've had so far is running Ubuntu-Classic without effects. Graphics then renders properly but still stuck with 1024x768.

Edit to my previous post: Graphics do render correctly with Unity as long as i stay to using only 1 screen (maybe also mirroring works but haven't tested it yet) I was able to get native resolution by adding the mode manually via the xrandr command, so apparently there is a bug that prevents the connected monitor to be correctly identified.

I now successfully(?) managed to replicate StijnVanCampenhout's problem with the diagonal lines and messed up graphics on my Compaq Mini CQ10 (Intel 945GME chipset). But, after some googling around the net it seems to me that Compiz is to blame for this bug. Everything works normally if i run Ubuntu Classic without effects. Still, it doesn't recognize my TV's native resolution as it did before so i have to force it upon Ubuntu by adding the modeline in .xprofile

@Robin will it be easy to undo your fix if an official fix will be released in the future?

Yep you can easely go back just un hold your updates that you put on hold and update

You can enable you 11.04 again thats wy you need to put the xorg drivers on hold those will be the only parts that wont be upgraded.

At the login screen when you choose Ubuntu no effects all works fine.

I followed your method and got S-Video working, but on the 2 monitors i tried it on the picture kinda....jumps or flickers every few seconds. changing the monitor settings doesn't seem to do anything. Never had this problem on 10.10. Any ideas?

But then I realized that I didn't have 10.10 version of sources.list

So I tried to re install above 2 packages "natty" versions. But now i don't get the unity at all. My laptop shows only blank screen... even when 2nd monitor isn't connected.

I'm still able to get to the command prompt via the recovery mode.

You should not mix in Natty packaes to Maverick, it is not supported nor advised.

I have seen many messages about issues with dual monitor config in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty and, in particular, notebook with (integrated) Intel HD Graphics.

 That's why I would like to share some information about my experience in dual monitor setup in hope that it may be helpful for some people.

 I have a notebook with Intel HD Graphics (1366x768 resolution) and Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit OS, 2.6.38-12-generic-pae kernel. The second monitor is Samsung SyncMaster BX2440 24 inches model (max resolution is 1920x1080).

 First I tried to connect the second monitor using VGA cable, monitor, to my surprise is automatically recognized (including an optimal resolution of 1920x1080), however, the screen had unpleasant light flickering.

 Next attempt I have made using HDMI to DVI cable and ... success ... the monitor was again automatically recognized and picture was clear and without ANY flickering.

Vladimir, thank you for comment. I suppose you are using a docking station? I am too using HDMI to DVI cable on a docking station with good results. I have upgraded to 11.10 in the meantime.

Had the same problem with my dual monitor setup on laprot with intel Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller. When the monitors were set up as mirrored everything was ok, if the monitors were set up nonmirror and hat the sam resolution everything was ok, the problem was if i applied diferent resolutions.
Tried to follow the suggested solution for purging the xserver and reinstalling it, but the purging removed quite a lot of packages and i wasnt cautius enough to see it also removed xserver-xorg, so i ended up in the terminal.
SO be careful what you do.
I then reinstalled all of the packages and the problem solved itself (using natty packages, not maverick).

@René My notebook model is Samsung Sens X280, it has no dock station as far as I know, it is model for Korean market and by hardware is similar to Dell Vostro V130. They both have HDMI socket in base. The Dell and Samsung seem sharing some hardware platforms.

Hi, I have a sony vaio that locks up solid if I connect a second monitor (like #23)
I tried the workaround posted in #24 but no luck.
