Ubuntu 10.10 now boots only to the terminal screen

Asked by Richard Reinhart

Ubuntu 10.10 with latest upgrade had been working well booting to the GUI interface. On recent boot, it now will only boot to the terminal screen without GUI. When booted in this mode, it will take normal terminal commands. How do I get back the GUI back?
Thanks

Try pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 should take you back to the GUI.

Try command "sudo startx" and report error messages.

The error messages are:

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2) unable to connect ot server
xinit: No such process (errno3) server error

Prior to these error messages, there was a lot verbage regarding checking directories and logs and then the message "gave up"

The other suggestion by Aruna P. "ctrl-alt-f7" did not work.

Thanks

Please avoid posting with previous answer included. It makes thread difficult to read.

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2) : unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Do you have previously:
ximit: No such file or directory (errno 2): no server "x" in path
The first error message is usually the most meaningful.

Can you help with this problem?
