I can only login in using desktop safe mode on my Dell GX150 Dell.

Asked by Rudy Kar

After installing a new Ubuntu 10.10, upon login my desktop remains empty except for an operative cursor.
I have enabled boot logging /etc/default/bootlogd and /etc/default/grub .
I am able to login after selecting user, selecting desktop safe mode, and then entering password.
I was able to configure vncserver/vncviewer and able to get a pop-up prompting access permissions wherein my other Ubuntu 10.10 is granted access to the same empty desktop.
I am seeking advise on were to look in the logs or what approach may work to enable a normal desktop login.

what do you mean by empty desktop?
are you familiar with seeing icons/applications on the desktop like in windoze?
ubuntu does not have icons/applications on the desktop unless you put them on the desktop. you can access applications from the menu that's at the top of the screen.

Empty means: There are no menus. There are no icons.
There is only the default purple background with a cursor that moves via
mouse.
The only way to get the menu at the top of the screen is to login in using
safe mode.

It might be a resolution problem. Try reconfiguring your graphics by,

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

sudo reboot now

Can you help with this problem?
