Ubuntu 10.10 upgrade problem

Had been using 10.4 just fine on a Dell Inspiron 530. Via the update manager, upgraded (I thought) to 10.10. Upon restart after the upgrade and after booting, the power saver turned off the monitor and neither movement of the mouse or hitting any key could get it back on. I could hear the log on page appearing, but could not get anything to work. Also noticed that the "num lock" button was off with this problem. It's as if the monitor and keyboard and become inoperative/disconnected.

Help!!!!!!

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:
