after upgrade to 10.4 computer hangs after ubuntu screen

Asked by Jim Medcalf

I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and everything worked fine. I then immediately upgraded to 10.04 LTS. I can boot to the Ubuntu screen with the five dots, this disappears and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. I can only turn off by holding the power button for some little time. If I run in Recovery Mode, the same thing happens if I "Resume normal boot", but if I run in low graphics mode, I can start Ubuntu (the graphics mode is not then "low", and everything works normally. BHow can I get back to starting normally, please?

Check if you can boot by modifying the grub linux line by adding "nosplash" (without apostrophes). If you can boot normally, but verbosely, you might have a problem with your graphic or plymouth settings; then try to solve these problems after booting up.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm afraid adding "nosplash" makes no
difference at all. The computer still hangs. Does it make any
difference that I have a dual boot system? Windows XP boots normally
when I select it.

Okay, understand your situation. Go to recovery, select 'boot as root with network', you will then be at command line with root privileges. Then type following.....
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get -f install
dpkg --configure -a

Then "Resume normal boot".

If you still have a problem, recheck grub by "sudo grub-install /dev/sda" (that is if you either have 1 hard disk *or* have more than 1 but boots to the first hard drive, which is normally the case).

Good luck, Jim.

I very sorry but I followed all your suggestions, and the position is exactly the same as before. Have you any suggestions, please, or am I going to have to re-install Ubuntu completely and lose all my programs and files?

Thanks again for trying.

Okay, Jim. Maybe it's best you reinstall. Just to make sure, download a new iso and burn at much slower speed, and check mdsum. You may want to copy over the files you need so you do not lose them.

Sorry can't be of more help.

Good luck again.
